On a general basis, most rocks weigh approximately 2,500 lbs. There are some rocks that are lighter in weight such as lavas and very porous rocks. These lighter weight rocks can range from 1,200 to 2,000 lbs per cubic yard
FAQ
One ton of rocks = 2,000 lbs. If a cubic yard of materials weighs 2,500 lbs this would convert into 1.25 tons per cubic yard. One ton of material is approximately ¾ of a cubic yard of material.
-
- If you’re using a ¾” or a smaller, please figure approximately 160 square feet per cubic yard of approximately120 square feet per ton. This is a coverage of approximately 2”
- If you decide on a larger size rock, consider two layers. Muliply the size rock x 2 and this will give you sufficient coverage in inches. Ex. 1-1/2” rock will need approximately a 3” coverage. Please refer to our estimator page to calculate your area or feel free to call the office and speak to one of our sales associates.
- Larger rocks such as cobbles range in size. Ex our 1-1/2”x4” cobble. Please use approximately a 3” average coverage. A 4”x8” cobble should use approximately an average of 6” coverage.

- We are happy to schedule a delivery for your landscape needs for a minimal charge. We do have a minimum of 1 cubic yard per item. We have trucks with a divider gate which allows us to bring two materials to your jobsite. During our busy season such as Spring, Summer and Fall, we are very busy and would need approximately 2 – 4 days advanced notice. We cannot give an exact time as we cannot predict traffic and other inhibiting factors that may delay the delivery. We give you a 4 hour time slot, but it is not necessary for you to be onsite as we know everyone has busy schedules. We ask for a particular dump area such as street or driveway.
- Forklift deliveries- Forklift deliveries are made Tuesday thru Friday only. Our access with the forklift is minimal. If you can drive your car to that area, then most likely we can drive the forklift. Most cases, we limit our forklift deliveries to driveways and street only.
- Back yard deliveries – we do not allow our trucks in backyards in general. If you have a gate to your backyard that is at least 12’ wide and there are no trees or wires inhibiting access, we can sometimes accommodate your request. Please ask a sales associate.
